For Tenants & Roommate Seekers
Always view before you pay
Visit the property in person (or send someone you trust) before paying anything. Never pay a deposit or rent for a unit you haven't seen.
Get it in writing
Ask for a written tenancy agreement before handing over money. It should state the rent, deposit, notice period, and what's included.
Never wire money to a stranger sight-unseen
Be wary of any landlord who pressures you to pay quickly, asks for payment before a viewing, or only communicates by text.
Keep communication on record
Use WhatsApp or in-app messaging rather than moving straight to cash. Keep a record of what was agreed in case of a dispute.
For Landlords
Verify who you're renting to
Ask for ID before signing an agreement, and consider asking for references from a previous landlord or employer.
Use a written agreement
Put the rent, deposit terms, and house rules in writing and have both parties sign before move-in.
